Who
comes to Folgosinho, will be admired with the
natural patrimony, as forests, the Natural Park of
Serra da Estrela and the Mondego River. We detach
also the Castle, the «Cerro das Forcas», the roman
pavements, the mills, the miradors and the Pillory.
The Castle is a precious and rare jewel, or even
unique, made of pure rosed-white quartz, inlayed in
the majestic and granite Serra da Estrela Mountain.
The Castle dominates haughty the Mondego Valley. It
is an immeasurable horizon, with various and
gracious settlements. It was there that the first
habitants snuggle together in this
very antique village of Folgosinho.
The Pillory, symbol of the municipal liberty and
autonomy given by our first Kings, elevates itself
on the square, in front of the «Municipal Houses».
Nowadays, the Pillory continues to be «the union
between past and present», a live document of
history and culture of Folgosinho’s people. As in
the old times, is in the Pillory that the people
meet to discuss and solve all the matters concerning
the uncultivated fields, the waters, the woods, the
ways and roads, and all general subjects of the
people.
In the XIX Century, the devastating wave of
liberalism and uncontrollable passions of uninformed
people have mutilated and destroyed the
majority of Pillories. The Folgosinho’s Pillory was
not an exception and was destroyed in 1864 and it
didn’t stay stone over stone. The new Pillory was
rebuilt in 1937, similar to the primitive one, with
the references of the architects that have concept
it and the ingenious artifice that executed it. The
monument is composed by three square steps, with
turned edges, over them lays a robust column with
four rectangular faces, with lightly chamfered
corners, straight from the bottom till the top.
The gallows was the place where were executed the
death condemned. This gallows was constituted by two
stone supports, vertically, fixed on the rocks with
one or more bars, from where
the criminals were suspended with cords. Generally,
the gallows were placed out of the villages,
approximately 200 or 400 meters far away, in a high
place, in the sight of the people who came to assist.
The majority was destroyed. From the gallows of
Folgosinho, we have just its place, forever named as
«Cerro das Forcas», as everybody calls them. It
stays 200 meters far from the Outeiro, near the road
that goes to the Calçada de Galhardos
