village from the 12th Century, sited 933 meters high,
on the northeast from Serra da Estrela, Folgosinho
has preserved its status of Village till 1836, year
in which Folgosinho has turned back to small village.
The word ‘Felgosino’, has been already referred by
D.Afonso Henriques, in the ‘Foral de Linhares’ in
1169, and has been repopulated by D.Sancho I who has
given it foral in 1187, confirmed by D.Afonso II in
1217.
D.Dinis has given it other foral in 1350 and
D.Manuel also in 1512.
Folgosinho origins are lost in the darkness of the
centuries, but as the tradition says it has been
founded by Viriato in 148 b.C.
Village from the King, sited in the old province of
Beira, has belonged till 1774 to the Coimbra’s
clergy and then to Guarda’s clergy.
It had as beneficiaries the Arronches monarchs and
th e
Lafões ducats. It has been commend from Christ Order.
With an area of 5.233 hectares, it has at North
Melo, Vila Cortês, Freixo de Serra and Figueiró da
Serra, at East with Linhares, Videmonte, Vale de
Amoreira , Famalicão da Serra and Vernelhas; at
South with Sameiro and Manteigas; at West with
Gouveia, S.Paio and Nabais.
Folgosinho is dominated by the mountains of
S.Domingos, El-Rei, S.Tiago and santinha, is also
crossed by small rivers and at South by the Mondego
River.
This typical village from Estrela, has an unique
history, usages and traditions. Edified between the
Castle and the Mountain, the up and down part of the
village has its historical centre in the Main Church
and in the Praça Publica, to where all the streets
go.
It has a compact area with one and two floor houses,
on of them for the animals and agriculture products;
and also an area with great farms.
We can see in its cultural patrimony: the Castle,
Adro do Viriato, The Church, Capela de S.Faustino,
Pelourinho, the Municipal House, the Court, the Jail,
replaced by a single house, the Fontenários, Casa do
Viriato, Rua de Quebra-Costas and Quintã, Janelas
Manuelinas, Alpendre dos Paivas, The Mountain with
its Mirage, Cruzeiro da Independência, Skate ring,
Party House from Senhora do Socorro, Forno anexo and
the great House from the Schools, founded in nicipal
and the 1930, the Citizens House, The Quarrel from
Firemen, Old People House and Daily Centre.
As Folgosinho extends by the Farms, it offers
several tourist ways with a rich cultural patrimony:
Roman Streets, Mills, Anthropomorphic Sepulchres, a
natural Museum ( Farad, Dog Head, shepherd, Old
woman, Holed Stone, Elephant, Sleeping Snake, Priest
Church, sculptural Snake), vestiges from the
Assedace Ruins and in Reigoso, the life of shepherd
people, the Mondego River from fishes, the Serra dos
Bois and great incomparable landscapes.

Outeiro.
2. In 15/8/2000 has been founded the Viriato statua,
relating the founder from Folgosinho.
3. In the Mountain, refer the Assedace Church, the
Reigoso farm with ruins from a palace, the
Anthropomorphic Sepulchres from Casal das Pias, the
Farad, the holed Stone, the Snake, the Mondego.
